Today is Victory Day in Russia. Today are the commemorations of the victory against the Nazi enemy.

This is what makes me sad about this war between Ukraine and Russia. Until recently, I saw the Russians as brothers with whom we defeated the Nazis.

Many people do not know it, but there are two different days of commemoration of the victory over the Nazis. In Europe, this commemoration is on May 8. In Russia it is 9 but. There is a reason for this.

The Germans first signed their surrender in a tent on the west side, on the side of the Allies (Americans, British, Canadians, French, Australians, etc.). It was a way of the Germans to insult the Russians a little more, as if the war had not been won by the Russians. This first signing of capitulation took place on May 8. The Russians immediately demanded a second signature with their representatives. By the time the arrangements were made, this second surrender ceremony took place overnight, so officially on May 9.
