War movies bore me. They bore me, because they are far from reality. Real war is so much more interesting, but also so much more terrible.
Take, for example, the movie Saving Private Ryan…
Watching the film, one has the impression that the Normandy landings were a real hell. However, the film shows the worst of the worst: Omaha beach. Omaha is aptly nicknamed "Bloody Omaha" because the German defenses there were still in good condition. The other beaches weren't as bloody. Some beaches were even "almost quiet": the German defenses had previously been largely destroyed by artillery and aviation.
It should also be remembered that the Landing included several assault waves. The film Saving Private Ryan therefore shows the worst beach, and the worst assault wave (the first).
In addition, the Allied aircraft prevented the Germans from bringing reinforcements to the beaches. If the Germans were disappointing on the beaches, it was simply because they were unable to bring their best troops there! The most violent fighting therefore often did not take place on the beaches, but inland, after the landings. The majority of the soldiers who took part in the D-Day therefore did not fire any shots on the beaches! Many of these soldiers then surely thought that what followed was going to be easy! Many were, however, to die. Again, war, the real one, is so deceptive and underhanded.
