This is an image of a Ukrainian artillery shell bursting in front of a Russian soldier, now known to be dead.

This image represents well the violence of the projectiles which are fired on a modern battlefield. It shows what looks like a wall of shrapnel. Each shard is a piece of metal as sharp as a sharp knife. These shards cut through flesh, organs and bones. A few days ago, I saw these shrapnel flash past me like red lasers. Moments later, I realized that my comrades had just been killed.

A modern battlefield is a place where machines shoot at machines. The little humans who find themselves in the middle of this metal storm are most often just trying to survive.
War is ugly.
