The road to the front looked like the beginning of an apocalypse, with roads filled with refugees fleeing the fighting. We were running out of gas and all the gas stations were empty. We approached a checkpoint occupied by a Ukrainian militia (Territorial Defense). The checkpoint was "decorated" with mannequins of Russian corpses hanging from a pole, just to set the tone.

At the checkpoint, the looks were dark. They were suspicious of us. The hands holding the AK-47s were ready to fire. After a few checks, and especially after the soldiers understood that we were coming to fight alongside them, the atmosphere changed completely. The soldiers lowered their weapons. We informed them of our gasoline problem. The unit commander escorted us to a gas station that still had some military fuel. We were invited to a small roadside restaurant. A hot meal was prepared for us by a lady, despite the food supply problems that were beginning in the area. The lady wore a yellow scarf on her arm, a symbol of Ukrainian fighters.

Ukrainians are tough on invaders, but welcoming to those who come to help them. It's hard not to love a people who want so much to be free!
